Job Description for Volunteer Tutor
Summary
The volunteer tutors an adult, in literacy and/or numeracy skills either one-on-one or in a small group.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Attend orientation session and relevant on-going tutor training.
- Write and sign a contract with your student detailing goals of tutoring.
- Inform the Literacy Coordinator of place, day and time of tutoring.
- Involve student in preparing and evaluating lessons.
- Set and check homework each week.
- Encourage student to be reassessed after 6 to 9 months of tutoring.
- Maintain confidentiality with respect to your work with your student.
Skills Attitude Knowledge
Tutors need to be proficient in speaking, reading and writing English. They need to be non-judgmental, patient and committed.
Relationship Liaison
Tutors discuss the tutoring position with the Coordinator once a month. They may request any materials and/or need for strategies with the Literacy Program Coordinator.
Resources
Tutors and students may use the Literacy library. The staff at the Literacy Program are available during office hours to give support.
Time Commitment
One to two hours tutoring a week and time for lesson planning, for a minimum of 3 to 6 months, is preferred, but arrangements can be made for specific projects.

Evaluations
Volunteers give input and make suggestions to the Coordinator about ways to improve the program. An evaluation session for the tutors is provided at the end of their tutoring commitment.
Staff Commitment
Staff will meet tutor regularly, either by phone or in person to discuss student progress. Staff will provide strategies and materials for tutoring. Staff offer tutor training and specialized workshops during the year.
